Their battle is not with you. Their battle is with themselves, and this transmits outwards onto you. For example, let's say you're a mean person (or at least the personal "self" that you are forced to live with is mean) and you see someone who is the embodiment of kindness. Seeing this person embody perfect kindness or compassion or happiness makes YOU angry because it reminds you of how unlike your true nature you really are.
When you realize that you are being shown how unlike your true self you really are, an inner conflict begins, the personal "self" you have identified with becomes threatened, and this leads to resentment of that other person, who is really just a reflection of your inherent qualities you have become foreign to.
